A Solid Foundation Comprising Our Core Values - Safety, Health, and the Environment, and Honesty, Integrity, and Fairness
History spanning over 120 years
Elements of our group began operations in 1893, and we continuously strive to apply the world-leading technology and expertise we have acquired over our history of more than 120 years to supply the energy that supports day-to-day life and provide high-value-added services and products, as well as offering enhancement for your life and business.
The TonenGeneral Group was created in June 2012 as a group of companies featuring integrated production and sales operations, with roots in the former Mobil Sekiyu, Esso Sekiyu, Tonen, and General Sekiyu. We subsequently strengthened our core businesses with initiatives such as the acquisition of complete ownership of NUC (formerly Nippon Unicar) in 2013 and the business integration of MOC Marketing (formerly MITSUI OIL) and Kyokuto Petroleum Industries in 2014.
Strengthening our core businesses
TonenGeneral Group petroleum products are manufactured at refineries in Japan that boast the highest level of energy efficiency in the country, and are sold under our trusted brands, Esso, Mobil and General. We have around 3,400 service stations nationwide and we continue to focus on expanding our network of strategic formats, which includes over 1,100 sites operated under our Express self-service brand, as well as over 120 alliance sites we have rolled out with Seven-Eleven convenience stores. In our lubricants segment, we utilize world-class technologies in products such as Mobil 1TM, our synthetic motor oil, to contribute to energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Japan through efforts such as helping to improve automotive fuel efficiency. At our chemical plant, which has been integrated with our refineries, we produce high-value-added, high-quality petrochemical products. These products, marketed both in Japan and overseas, contribute to the convenience and quality of day-to-day life.
Developing our core business in growth areas and overseas
In addition to strengthening our core businesses, we are developing our business in growth areas and overseas as part of our business strategy. In our electric power business, one of our growth options, we began retail sales of electric power on the low-voltage market with full deregulation of the market in April 2016. As for our overseas business, in Australia we are developing a fuel marketing and distribution business as well as a fuel storage facility. In addition, at the end of 2015, we executed a memorandum of understanding regarding business integration with JX Holdings, Inc., with the aim of developing into one of the most prominent and internationally-competitive comprehensive energy, natural resource and materials company groups in Asia, and to contribute to the development of a sustainable and vigorous economy and society.
In 2015, we summarized our corporate philosophy for the further growth of the TonenGeneral Group. In formulating this philosophy, we reaffirmed the elements that form the foundation of the Group, namely safety, health and the environment, along with honesty, integrity and fairness.
Over our long history, we have developed a corporate culture in which we place great emphasis on business ethics. Furthermore, the idea that maintaining safety, health and the environment is of the utmost importance in all of our business operations is firmly entrenched throughout our organization. As a result, we have maintained one of the lowest employee lost-time injury rates in the industry, and with regard to energy conservation, we have been recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as having achieved the government’s energy benchmarks. We have also been selected for the second consecutive year by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Tokyo Stock Exchange as a “Brand of Companies Enhancing Corporate Value through Health and Productivity Management (KENKO KEIEI Brand). Furthermore, we have maintained one of the highest rates among Japanese companies for annual employee paid vacation taken, with a rate of 95.0% in 2015.
In our corporate philosophy, we have designated seven values, with safety, health and the environment, and honesty, integrity and fairness, at their core. These values are our guiding principles and serve as the criteria for judgment and action in all facets of our business operations. Our values also form the basis for the other elements that make up our corporate philosophy, including the mission that we are working to achieve and the solutions we offer for the enhancement of day-to-day life and the benefit of society.
We have also created a new slogan, “Think deeply, Shape the future.”, to epitomize our corporate philosophy. This slogan expresses our wisdom in getting down to the essence and thinking rationally, and our enthusiasm in taking steady action to effect positive change for the future. As we embark on a new phase in our history, TonenGeneral Group management and employees will continue to work as a team, thinking together, shaping the future together.
